Solar-cars chase the sun down Hwy 180

The intersection in Roby saw a steady stream of unusual traffic, as solar-powered cars rolled through town during the first leg of the 2018 Solar Car Challenge. It is a six-day race where high school students from around the nation design, build, and race their solar-powered cars from the Texas Motor Speedway to sunny, Palmdale California.

The challenge began in 1993 when the Winston Solar Car Team started a high school education program with the idea of teaching students to not only build but safely race roadworthy solar cars.
