The gridiron heats up for season openers

With the first two weeks of school coming to an end and pre-season workouts and scrimmages behind them, area football teams are getting ready for the season opener and preparing for the first Friday night battle of the year.

Ironically, the season opener for the Aspermont Hornets will be against the Newcastle Bobcats and their former coach, Julian Menchaca. Traditionally, the Bobcats have been a strong competitor and the Hornet’s Coach Mark Weaver said in pre-season that Newcastle is just one of several his team will face this year.

“We have a very tough schedule so we got to take it one game at a time. Each week will be our toughest opponent,” said Weaver.

Weaver said he felt good about the scrimmages and competing against some strong teams that will help them with on a tough game schedule. He said the scrimmage against Blackwell showed a lot of good things but also areas of improvement.
