Much Ado about Muddin'

For weeks the county has been caught in a crossfire between the Fisher County Chamber of Commerce and the newly formed Red Dirt Mud Bog LLC. Contract agreements, insurance coverage, and talks of potential litigation have kept county officials behind closed doors, where they debated in elevated voices prior to reaching an agreement last week.

Fans of the local Red Dirt Mud Bog will be pleased to know this year’s event will, once again, be held at the rodeo grounds in Rotan, land officially known as the Sheriff’s Posse Arena. The first mud bog of 2019 is scheduled for the month of June, provided the coordinators present the necessary event insurance coverage.

While the Fisher County Chamber of Commerce has co-sponsored the mud bog since it relocated to the arena about two years ago, due to concerns about insurance coverage, potential lawsuits and under the advisement of other rural committee organizations, the chamber will not sponsor the upcoming summer events.

The chamber launched a membership drive earlier this year as well as a plan to restructure itself. Back in

Chamber President Sarah McLen said the process would be slow and organic over several months. As several chamber records have been lost over time, one of the first steps was to implement improved bylaws and assure the chamber is legally protected when hosting any community event.
