Roby CISD approves budget and prepares for bond election

Although controversial discussions regarding teacher salary schedules have slowed budget talks for Roby CISD in recent months, the board stretched local and state dollars as far as possible without going in the red and approved this year’s budget during Monday night’s meeting. The trustees also adopted adopt this year’s compressed tax rate before approving contracted services in preparation for a bond election in 2020.

Roby CISD trustees have faced dozens of teachers and citizens in a series of meetings since early July and listened to concerns about how state legislation might affect local teacher salaries. It wasn’t whether teachers would receive a raise this year. The question was how much of a raise and at what cost.

In prior years, Roby CISD has paid its teachers above the state minimum, based on certain credentials. Teachers with a BA earned $2,000 above, and those with a Masters earned $2,400 above. The district also offered stabilization pay, a $1,000 addition to most salaries.
