Members of the Roby Lions Club came out to test the vision of over a hundred Rotan students Monday, unveiling new eye scanners the club has worked with neighboring organizations for over a year to acquire.

Teaming up with Lions Clubs from Snyder and Lamesa, the Roby Lions Club generated enough funds to purchase three new eye scanners, devises that had to be rented in the past. The scanners look and operate similar to a camera, with lights and sounds designed to attract the younger kids’ attention.

It simply takes a picture and computes whether a person should see an eye doctor. Although the scanners do diagnose, it works quite well at detecting major and minor vision problems.

Even though some students were absent, the scanners helped test almost 120 students from pre-k through seventhgrade classes. While other Lions Clubs reported there were approximately one in four students that were recommended to see an eye doctor, Rotan ISD’s numbers were considerably less.
