Yellowhammer Band returns to the Alamodome

It only comes around once every other year, and the 34-member group of Rotan musicians has been working since August for when it all goes down starting Monday at San Antonio’s Alamodome, as the band takes to the field to compete at the 2019 State UIL Marching Band Championship.

As Yellowhammer Band Director Jessica Watkins puts what she refers to as Bandtober behind her, she and the young musicians she conducts are looking toward November 4 and the biennial state competition. Texas state band competitions are scheduled every other year, making 2018 an off-year for the group.

The Rotan Yellowhammer Marching Band received first division ratings from each of the judges at San Angelo University’s Concho Classic, in early October against a number of prior state contenders. The group later racked up additional first division ratings and earned the honor of best overall band at the later Seymour competition.
