Shailyn Kendrick-Dickerson - Rotan

At the regional competition last week runners from Aspermont, Roby, and Rotan school districts earned an opportunity to compete in the UIL State Cross Country Championships this Saturday, November 9, in Round Rock.

For these young competitors, days start well before the sun is even considering rising, and each of them put more miles on their shoes in those early hours that the rest of do all week. In the darkness, the chilly — and sometimes frigid — morning air, with nothing more than their breathing, heart rate, and feet pounding to keep them company.

It has been a busy week for senior Shailyn Dickerson from Rotan. Earlier this week, Dickerson was in San Antonio where she performed at the state marching competition with the Rotan Yellowhammer Band, where afterward, she repacked her bags and was swept off to Round Rock.

This will be the fourth trip to the state event for Dickerson, having first earned a spot in 2016. Averaging just over a 6-minute mile, Dickerson came in second overall with a time of 12:03. Suffering from injuries in 2017, Dickerson dropped in overall placement but was on the mend and finished in the top 20 last year.
