I was blessed to have good parents. My father was a DPS State Trooper and my mother was a middle school teacher. They taught me about giving an honest day’s work, always trying to do the right thing, standing up for what you believe, spending your time and effort where it will do the most good, and the importance of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. I was able to go to work with my father on many occasions and observe his interactions with people. From watching those, I learned that often people will tell you what they think you want to hear, tell you whatever it takes to convince you of something, or give reasons for their actions that are not always accurate.

At TASA/TASB Convention this year, I spent a little time reflecting over former Rotan ISD employees that positively influenced me – teachers Betty Strayhorn, Kay Kennedy, Barbara McCain, Kelley Starnes, Evelyn Nowlin, Olan Fryar, Robert and Ruth Witherspoon, Nita Smith, Debbie Burnes, Dee Ann Mullins, and Joye Stinson; coaches Weldon Nelms, Danny Diggs, and Bruce Merrell; principals Marshall Hill and Don Bryan, and superintendent Alton Fields. I miss those people and the example they set for Rotan ISD.
