Car fire blocks traffic between Rotan and Hamlin

Fisher County emergency response crews worked to extinguish the flames of a vehicle fire last week as authorities stopped traffic on Hwy 92 between Rotan and Hamlin. Fire crews were able to quench the blaze and prevent the spread of the fire to the surrounding grassland, and although it was a freighting ordeal for the driver and two children, everyone escaped without injury.

It was just supposed to be a short trip to Hamlin for a bit of shopping and a pizza to go for Rotan resident Alicia Almanza and her two boys. And while the first leg of her trip went as planned, the trip home took an unexpected turn as a malfunctioning air conditioner turned into a vehicle fire.

“The air stopped working, so I started to pull off to the side,” said Almanza. “I looked in the rearview mirror and saw all this black smoke.”

A second look in the mirror revealed the smoke had dissipated. She didn’t smell smoke — or any other smell — but thinking the car may have overheated, she went ahead and brought the car to a stop. She said the car had never given her any trouble, and she can’t explain what happened.
