Stonewall County braces for a tough budget year

The Stonewall County Commissioners reviewed the upcoming budget for the 2021 Fiscal Year, and while the certified appraisal values will not be released until next month, the county is anticipating a tight budget cycle.

“It’s next year I’m worried about,” said Stonewall County Judge Ronnie Moorhead during Monday’s commissioners court meeting. He informed the court that preliminary figures received from the county appraisal district predict a roughly$30 million reduction in appraised mineral values going into this budget cycle. Moorhead said he does not expect those numbers to change much by the time the certified values are released sometime next month.

It has been a long time since the oil and gas industry was seeing prices of near $114 per barrel like it was in April 2011. Nevertheless, oil prices hovered around the mid-fifties per barrel during most of 2019, and in mid-February of 2020, prices were over $53 per barrel.
