Local youth center bids Godspeed to beloved co-founder

By Jeff Hurt

As co-founder of No Need For Need and director of Roby youth center the Hub for almost a decade, August 22 will be Shannon Wilburn’s last day, as her walk with Christ is taking her to Atlanta.

Wilburn went to San Angelo State on a basketball scholarship, earned her degree, and later became a coach and teacher, a trait she assumed she would do for the rest of her life. When her father, Jim passed away in 2006, thoughts of home and of her mother pulled at her heart.

Raised in a household embracing the teachings of scripture, Shannon learned in her earliest memories the answers to life's struggles are often discovered through prayer. So she prayed about it and simply walked away from a number of coaching opportunities to return home.

Hospital CEO Leanne Martinez informed the FCH board members of a payment totaling just under $1 million the hospital received the morning prior to Monday night’s meeting. The funds were due to Medicare underpayments for 2017.

Martinez said the hospital used a portion of the funds to make the necessary payments to bring the hospital up to date, approximately $167,000 in bills, leaving the district just under $800,000 in the general account. She said the hospital would soon be making investments not seen in quite some time.

Fisher County Historical News

During the month of May, the Fisher County Historical Commission sold tickets for a drawing. The drawing was held to bring a little publicity to the Commission, and hopefully spark some interest in others in the county. President Zenita Gardner drew the winning ticket (see attachment) and it belonged to a long-time member of the Newman community. Jim Lanning has since moved to New York, but he won the book, Veterans of Fisher County!

The Commission met Tuesday night with 15 members and 2 guests present. The night’s presentation was on the History of the Newman Community and enjoyed by all present. Refreshments followed the meeting.
