Rotan ISD School Board spotlights yearbook Staff

 

The Rotan ISD School Board recognized the members of the Rotan High School Yearbook Staff at the School Board meeting last Monday night. This upcoming school year will be the fist year in many where a designated student staff will oversee the production of the yearbook.

Homecoming in… Eskota!? by Elaine Starkey

 

The old town of Eskota in the Southeast corner of Fisher County has never been very big. The town was supposed to be named after Riley Trent, but the railroaders threw off the Eskota sign in Trent and the Trent sign in Eskota. I have never been able to find out why the signs were not simply switched back, nor what Eskota was named for. 

   I’ve heard a couple of stories...

County Commissioners green light “Saturday Night on the Square”

Prayer on the Square

Several were in attendance at the courthouse square last Friday, to have a time of prayer and reflection for those lost in the 

September 11th tragedy. George Pasley (den leader), Mason Pasley, J.D. Ditmore, Kadon Waldon, Adler Pasley, Kallen Moody, 

members of Cub Scout Troop 175 began the ceremony with the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag. 

Ministers from several denominations were present, and lead the group in prayer and inspirational speeches.

Local Schools are off to a great start

 

In an interview last week, local superintendents reported the total enrollment of Roby is 278 students with the elementary/jr. high campus at 204 students and the high school campus at 74 students. Rotan reported the total enrollment at 275 students with the elementary at 162 students and the secondary at 113 students. 

   In a brief interview with the superintendents last week they talked about getting back into the swing of things.

Fire on County Rd 120

The Roby and Rotan Fire Departments were called out to a fire in the 4 o’clock hour of September 9. The fire broke out at the Spradlin home while the owners were on vacation in Colorado. Their son, Brian Dickson was asleep inside.

Local author debuts book at National Cowboy Symposium

 

 Rotan resident, Susan Martinez just wrapped up a 10 year project, which she plans to unveil at the National Cowboy Symposium and Celebration, on September 11th, 12th, and 13th in Lubbock, Texas.  Her book Bigger Than Texas: John Nathan Hittson And The American Indian Wars, came about during a search into the family history about the mysterious deaths of 3 grandfathers.

Criminals Beware! The neighborhood is watching you

 

The Neighborhood Watch had its first meeting Tuesday night at the Roby courthouse. There were roughly 20 concerned citizens in attendance each ready to learn how they can play a part in crime reduction within their city. County sheriff J.A. Robinson was also present in order to help educate citizens on how they can assist the law enforcement community in obtaining vital information.
