Eddie Gayle Thomas, Sr., 85, went home June 7, 2019 in Richmond, Texas. Funeral services will be Saturday, June 15 at 2:00 in Cross Trails Cowboy Church, Fairlie, Texas. Visitation will be from 12 until 2:00.

Eddie was son of A. W. Thomas and Vera Wright and was born in Fisher County Texas on May 6, 1934. He attended Rotan schools, Hardin-Simmons University 1962-1965, and Texas A&M University(College Station) 1976.

Lois Jane “Janie” Rains passed away Sunday, June 2, 2019, following a brief illness.

Janie was born December 22, 1928, to Gerome and Jewell McSpadden in Hobart, Oklahoma. The family moved to Rotan, Texas in 1935. Janie attended Rotan schools, graduating from Rotan High School in 1946. She was a cheerleader and voted Senior Queen.

Janie was married to Odell Rains for 47 years until his death in 1993. They were faithful members of Cross Roads Baptist Church where Janie taught Sunday School classes and especially enjoyed teaching GA’s for many years.

In the community she enjoyed several roles in the Fisher County Historical Society. Her favorite hobby was quilting, and she was able to make a quilt for each of her 15 great grandchildren as well as quilts that she gifted to others.

Bonnie Jean McDowell

Bonnie Jean McDowell Sallee died at 12:44am on Thursday, May 16, 2019. She was born on February 6, 1958, where she was born in Stamford, Texas, to Eugene and Bonnie McDowell. She was the youngest of five McDowell children. Bonnie is survived by her son, Robert Houston Sallee (Stacie), and two grandchildren, Jadah Sallee and William Sallee. She is also survived by one brother, David McDowell (Linda); two sisters, Sharon Stanaland (Royce) and Judy Kenady; and many nieces and nephews with their children and grandchildren. Bonnie is preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Bonnie McDowell; her oldest sister, Sandra Schuessler; and brother-in-law, Kenny Kenady.

Hartines Elaine Donham Lakey, 99, passed away June 2, 2019. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 6, 2019, at the Hamlin Church of Christ. Visitation will be 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Church of Christ. Burial will be in Hamlin Memorial Cemetery, directed by Adams-Foster-Ray Funeral Home.

Hartines Elaine Donham Lakey was born January 11, 1920 in Eastland, Texas. Her parents were William David (Dave) Donham and Pauline Warren Donham. They moved extensively finding farm work from Weatherford to Fisher County. She called Royston in Fisher County her home whenever she talked about home. Her mother was often sick, but her dad was a hard worker. She had one brother L.B., who died as an infant, and two other brothers, Bill and Ben. She had two sisters, Velma and Essie Lee. All her siblings preceded her in death as did her parents.

Marcia Gail Murrill Goodrum 73, passed away on May 19, 2019 at her home in Rotan.

Gail was born December 19, 1945 in Carksville, Texas to Kennith Edward Murrill and Juanita Knight Murrill.

She Graduated from Van Horn High School in 1963. Following graduation, she earned a B.A. degree from Sul Ross College at Alpine, Texas in 1967. After several years of teaching high school, Gail became a manufacturing supervisor for several firms in the Dallas including Texas Instruments.

Gail Married Donald Goodrum on December 20, 1969 in Van Horn. They taught school in Van Horn and Stanton over the next few years. Gail is survived by her husband of almost 50 years, her daughters Monica Bercher and husband Brett, Bill Carter and Craig of Graham Texas, and son Warren Goodrum.

Gail has four grandchildren; Grace Bercher, Mason Goodrum, and Lauren & Kayla Carter.

John Henry Mayer, 86, passed away May 13, 2019, in Longview. Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2019, in the Jayton Cemetery, directed by Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home. Visitation will be 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home chapel.

John was the son of the late Loranze and Minnie (Schindler) Mayer. He graduated from Jayton High in 1949. John served in the United State Army from 1953-1955. He married Helen Chandler November 19, 1955, in Hamlin. John was an avid reader, loved to dance and very musically talented. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Jayton and The Son of Herman Lodge in Aspermont.

John is preceded in death by his parents, wife and one daughter, Paula Jean Graham.

Eilene (McReynolds) Cave, age 101, passed away Sunday April 28, 2019 in Snyder TX.

Graveside services will be 10:00AM, Wednesday, May l, 2019 at Roby Cemetery. Burial will follow. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home. Family will receive friends from 6:00PM to 7:30PM, Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home in Sweetwater.

She was born September 17, 1917 in Plum Creek, Nolan County, Texas to Robert Lee and Lillian (Benton) McReynolds. She graduated from Sweetwater High School and attended Abilene Christian College and Texas Women's University in Denton, TX.

After college, Eilene moved to Roby, Texas to teach in the Center School. In Roby she met and married James Cave on May 20, 1939.

Rose Marie (Hart) Simmons

Rose Marie (Hart) Simmons was born in Aspermont on April 7, 1946, to William Jordan and Emma Ruth Hart.

On June 1, 1963, Rose Marie and Donald Simmons were married in the First Baptist Church of Aspermont. Donny and Rose Marie had two children, Sondra and Randall. After a few years in Texas, the family moved to New Mexico, where Donny and Rose Marie resided for over thirty years. In 2008, Rose Marie decided to return to Aspermont to be near Donny, who is buried in the Aspermont cemetery, and to return to her roots. Rose Marie Simmons peacefully joined her beloved in heaven on her 73rd birthday, April 7, 2019.

McCaulley- Mary Arlene (Marlene) Carter, 86, has gone to be with the Lord on April 21, 2019. Graveside services will be11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2019, in Belvieu Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Weathersbee- Ray Funeral Home.

Mary was born in Rotan, Texas on May 13, 1932 to the late Robert and Leatha Martin. She moved to Roby when she was two years old. Mary married Billy Ray Carter on January 28, 1949 in Roby, by Rev. Hughley. After they married the couple moved back to Rotan, and in 1957 made their home in Odessa. Mary loved her daughters and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, two brothers, Artie and Maurice and one daughter, Connie Garrison.

Survivors include her husband, Billy Ray Carter; four daughters, Malinda Garrett, Madena Hamilton, Marla Carr, and Bonnie Upshaw; seventeen grandchildren; thirty-four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

In Loving Memory Donald (Don) Bruce

Donald (Don) Bruce Cleveland, 83, of Denton, Texas passed away on April 17, 2019. In 1977, Professor Emeritus Don Cleveland joined the faculty of the University of North Texas where he was the architect of the internationally recognized interdisciplinary doctoral program in information science.

Don was born on December 16, 1935 in Rotan, Texas to Bruce and Sammie (Harris) Cleveland. He graduated from Rotan High School in 1954 and served in the U.S. Army from 1956-1958. Following his military service, he graduated from Howard Payne University in 1959. He went on to receive a master’s degree in library science from the University of Texas at Austin in 1962, a master’s degree in computer science (with a mathematics minor) from Texas A&M University in 1970, and a Ph.D. in information science from Case Western Reserve University in 1973 where he taught for three years before joining the University of North Texas faculty.
