Yellowhammer basketball finishes 2019-20 season

The Rotan Hammers finished their 2019-2020 season with 5 wins and 7 losses. On February 14 at Paint Creek, the Hammers defeated the Pirates by the final score of 63-13. The team never trailed in this game…the team used a 19-2 run in the opening period that led to a blowout victory! (Junior) Koy Bell recorded his third DOUBLE-DOUBLES of District Play…he led the team with 12 REBOUNDS, 17 POINTS, 6 STEALS, AND 4 ASSISTS. (Senior) Noah Foster led the team in points scored: 18 PTS, 4 REBS, 1 AST, 1 STL; (Senior) Trent Josey-8 PTS and 5 REBS; (Freshman) Zac Flores-7 PTS, 5 STL, 4 REBS, and 1 AST; (Freshman) Jaxon Warren-6 PTS, 5 REBS, 4 STL, 2 AST; (Freshman) Jordan Daniel-5 PTS, 2 REBS, 1 AST; (Junior) Kaden Dycus-2 PTS, 2 REBS, 1 STL.

Lady Lions defeat Hamlin; The Lions rout Rule

The Lady Lions and Lions began Tuesday in Hamlin with all four teams in action. The Lady Lions had to defeat the Lady Pipers to seal third place in the district and advance to the playoffs; and they were successful in their endeavor.

The JV Lady Lions had the first game of the evening. After trailing by only one point at the half 10-11, the Ladies had a scoreless third period to fall behind 10-30. The Ladies outscored the JV Pipers 8-6 in the final period but ended up losing 18-36. The Ladies were led by Laramie Harris in scoring and rebounding having double digit rebounds with 12. Stats: Laramie Harris 6 points, 12 rebounds, Taylor Moore 5 points, 3 rebounds, Gracie Powell 5 points, 2 rebounds, Alicia Betancourt 2 points, 5 rebounds, McKenzie Barrera 5 rebounds.

On February 4, the Lady Hammers hosted the Lady Lions in a rematch (losing the first game—29-46). The second game was a lot closer: the game was tied in the final period with 7.79 seconds left in the game…a member of Roby were at the foul line; unfortunately, for the Lady Hammers, two free-throws were made and it led to the final score of 37-39. Lion teams rack up big wins

Roby and Rotan met Tuesday night in Rotan with Roby winning both games. The Lady Lions and Lady Hammers played an exciting, close, hard fought game; with the Lady Lions Brynlie Johnson sinking two free throws with 7 seconds remaining to take the lead 39-37. The Lady Lions jumped out to an 8-2 lead but saw the Lady Hammers whittle away at it; taking the lead with 3:33 remaining in the first half. The Lady Lions responded quickly; regaining the lead and held the lead 19-16 at the half. The third period was low scoring, ending with the Lady Lions leading by one point 26-25. The fourth period had numerous lead changes with Brynlie Johnson scoring 8 of her 12 points in the final 2 minutes of the game; 6 from the free throw line. Two Lady Lions were in double digits with Emilea Cole leading with 14; followed by Brynlie Johnson 12, also scoring for the Lady Lions were Berkley Johnson 8 points, Mackenzie Castillo 3 points, and Laney Stewart with 2 points.

The Lady Hornets officially took the district title after battling with Hamlin on Feb 7th. The Lady Hornets have an impressive record with 12-0 in district and 24-6 overall.

In the 1st quarter, the swarm was consistent in all shots on the floor. Sadie Gentry made the 1st 3-pointer for the evening. Aaliyah Miller scored 4 pts down below. Angelika Baez made a basket and 1/2 (50%) free throws for 3 pts. Jenna Berry added in 2/2 (100%) free throws. The score at the end of quarter was 12-7.

In the 2nd quarter, they widened their lead against the Pied Pipers. Miller scored a basket and made 1/2 (50%) free throws for 3 pts. Berry also made a basket and made 1/2 (50%) for 3 pts. Patricia Murguia chipped in 2-point basket as well. The score at the end of the half was 21-15.

On January 27, the Junior High Lady Hammers defeated the Paint Creek Lady Pirates: 22-13 at home. Fronterhouse had 8 PTS, 7 REBS, 3 STL; Fillingim-6 PTS, 3 REBS; Martinez-5 PTS, 2 REBS, 2 AST, 1 STL; Gaspar-2 PTS, 4 REBS, 2 AST, 1 STL; H. The Lady Lions and Lions hosted Rule on Tuesday the 21st, the Lady Lions lost in a close game 40-44 and the Lions won their game 72-17. The Lady Lions had two girls in double digits led by Berkley Johnson with 16 and Mackenzie Castillo with a double double of 10 points and 12 rebounds. Stats: Berkley Johnson 16 points, 4 rebounds, Mackenzie Castillo 10 points, 12 rebounds, Emilea Cole 7 points, 8 rebounds, Brynlie Johnson 5 points, 9 rebounds, Hilda Gutierrez 3 rebounds, Zena Hargrove 2 rebounds, Hope Garmer 1 rebound.

Hornets rack up a week's worth of wins

The Aspermont Hornets hosted the Roby Lions in a district game at home on Friday, Jan. 24th.

The Lady Hornets overwhelmed the Lady Lions and the swarm took advantage during the beginning of the 1st quarter. Aaliyah Miller scored 6 pts as post. Jenna Berry also scored a basket with 3/4 (75% accuracy) free throws for a total of 5 pts. Sadie Gentry, Celie Gentry, and Gracie Fraser each contributed 2 pts a piece for an ending 1st quarter score of 17-9.
