Aspermont wins final game against Bobcats before district play

By Jeremiah & Terry Morris

The Aspermont Hornets made their way down HWY 380 in search of their 5th win. The search would lead them 21 miles east and in the home of their long time rival, the Rule Bobcats.

The Bobcat team had to take a rain check in the 2017 season due to lack of players. There would be a game on this night, although the Bobcats may have wished to use their rain check option again as the swarm came out hot and never looked back. A 36-0 score at the end of the 1st quarter and 60-0 at halftime ended the ballgame due to the mercy rule.

Looking finely tuned and well oiled, the Hornets scored at will and with multiple players reaching the end zone by ground and air on offense. The defense chipped in with stop after stop, a few interceptions, some big hits, and even a safety. It was a great showcase of the SWARM’S teamwork and talent.

Aspermont Hornets Defeat Lubbock All Saints 76 - 28

The Aspermont Hornets played host to a Lubbock Episcopal All Saint Patriots last Friday night. The swarm, who harbor one of the best ground games in the State of Texas, came out and set a pace of keep up or get left behind.

The Hornets would get the luck of the coin flip and receive the opening kickoff as Clayton Martin wasted no time in racing 22 yards for a Hornet TD and an early 6-0 lead. However, the All Saints Patriots had some talent on its roster as well and used it to march down and tie up the game 6-6. After a 45 yard dash by Rowdy Bradley and a 2 pt by Brayden Allbright making 14-6. The Patriots would push back, but the swarm blocked the 2 pt conversion making it 14-12 giving the Hornets a small lead they would quickly build on with another Bradley TD. The defense started to key in on the Patriot offense coming up with a big stop allowing RB Chris Mendez to punch one in making it 26-12 Hornets at the end of first quarter.

Yellowhammers 45 the Raiders in 4th quarter

The Rotan Yellowhammers proved too much for Leuders-Avoca during last Friday nights game, evoking the 45 rule in the fourth quarter with a game-ending score of 64 – 16.

The Yellowhammers were up by six near the end of the first quarter, but a long pass completion by the Raider’s offense and a good PAT brought the score to 6 – 8 with about a minute left on the clock. Rotan would squeeze another touchdown before the end of the quarter, giving the Yellowhammers a lead they would hold onto for the remainder of the game.

Huge defensive plays by Rotan’s Brian Williams, pushing the Raider’s ball carrier deep into their own backfield on two consecutive plays, resulting in major loss in yardage for the Raiders in the second quarter.

Hornets upset Knox City 64 - 50

By Jeremiah & Terry Morris

The Aspermont Hornets (who some experts had picked to lose as much as 35 points) travelled to rain-soaked Knox City with a message. That message is that the swarm have a spread defense and a great running game. Coach Weaver decided to use Junior running back Rowdy Bradley to hammer their message home.

As the rain poured down, the Greyhounds received the opening kickoff. The swarm wasted no time in showing off an improved spread defense holding the Greyhounds to a 4 and out. This gave the Hornets a boost in confidence and gave the offense a good field position. The Hornets quickly got on the board with a touchdown by Sophomore bruiser Chris Mendez.

By Jeff Hurt

Coming off a devastating loss against Miles, the Roby Lions were hoping for a victory last Friday against Ranger, but a series of offensive and defensive errors allowed the Bulldogs to finish the game with a 6 – 28 win over the Lions.

Hornets upset Jayton in 76 – 38 victory

Although anticipating the win in last Friday’s game against Aspermont, the Hornet defense proved stronger than expected, as Jayton was unable to control the offensive teamwork of Bradley, Mendez, and Martin, who led the Hornets to a 76 – 38 upset.

“I thought we played very well overall. Every week we ask the boys to do their job, be physical, and most importantly play hard,” said Aspermont Coach Zach Morris. “Our coaching staff was very proud of the effort the boys showed during the game.”
