Hornets upset Jayton in 76 – 38 victory

Article Image Alt Text

Although anticipating the win in last Friday’s game against Aspermont, the Hornet defense proved stronger than expected, as Jayton was unable to control the offensive teamwork of Bradley, Mendez, and Martin, who led the Hornets to a 76 – 38 upset.

“I thought we played very well overall. Every week we ask the boys to do their job, be physical, and most importantly play hard,” said Aspermont Coach Zach Morris. “Our coaching staff was very proud of the effort the boys showed during the game.”

The gridiron heats up for season openers

By Jeff Hurt

With the first two weeks of school coming to an end and pre-season workouts and scrimmages behind them, area football teams are getting ready for the season opener and preparing for the first Friday night battle of the year.

Hornets
Ironically, the season opener for the Aspermont Hornets will be against the Newcastle Bobcats and their former coach, Julian Menchaca. Traditionally, the Bobcats have been a strong competitor and the Hornet’s Coach Mark Weaver said in pre-season that Newcastle is just one of several his team will face this year.

“We have a very tough schedule so we got to take it one game at a time. Each week will be our toughest opponent,” said Weaver.

Weaver said he felt good about the scrimmages and competing against some strong teams that will help them with on a tough game schedule. He said the scrimmage against Blackwell showed a lot of good things but also areas of improvement.

Area teams gear up for 2018 Fall Sports Season

Article Image Alt Text

Two-a-days ramped up for area football teams, while volleyball teams jumped right into pre-season scrimmages, and cross country teams literally took off in a running start this week.

Eyes have been on the Roby Lions in recent months, burdened with concerns about the future of the football program. Former Superintendent Heath Dickson met with members of the football team as well as parents in order to discuss the future of the team as recently as mid-July, specifically whether or not to remain as an 11-man team or drop down into the six-man classification.

Summer rehearsals begin for Rotan Yellowhammer Band

Article Image Alt Text

Although the percussion section was off to an early lead, and first-year marchers got their first taste in last pre-rehearsals, summer band officially kicked off when the full ensemble began rehearsing. The roughly 40-member Rotan Yellowhammer Marching band started preparing for this year’s upcoming marching band season last week.

As UIL state competitions are scheduled every other year, this will be a non-advancing year for the band. As a result, the group is looking forward to the chance at having a bit more fun on the field this year, as they prepare to hoist the sails on a pirate themed show.
