Jayton Holiday Tournament

Christmas break means the return of the Jayton Holiday Tournament for both boys and girls teams in the area.

The first game for the Lady Jays varsity was against the Rule Bobcats. The Lady Jays sprinted up and down the court barley having to make a defensive move. By the final buzzed the Lady Jays out scored Rule 41-11.

Roby Lions win against Knox City Greyhounds

The Knox City Greyhounds came to Roby on December 18th to play the Lions and Lady Lions in a game prior to the semester break. The Lions and Lady Lions won all three games. The J.V. Boys won 58-33, Caleb Helm had a double double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, and A.J led the boys in scoring with 21 points. The boys jumped out early and never trailed. Individual stats: A.J Ramirez 21 points,2 rebounds, 1 assist, , 5 steals, Caleb Helm 12 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, Laith Abu- Ajameh 8 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, Houston Harris 7 points, 1 rebound, Zachary Morgan 6 points, 5 rebounds, Brendon Barriere 4 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals, 4 blocks.

Jayton varsity basketball programs successful

The Jaybirds dominated this past weekend in the annual Robert Hall Chevrolet Tournament. Winning three out of four games put their overall record at 9-3 for the season so far.

First game for Jayton was against the Hamlin Pied Pipers. The top scorer for the Jaybirds in this game was Tye Scogin with 22 points. Jayton won with over 20 points making the score 45-22 at the end of the game.

Friday’s morning game for the Jaybirds was against the Roby Lions. Jayton and Roby are ranked closely to each other in the top 20. Ending the game ten points ahead (63-53), Jayton celebrated and got ready for the afternoon game.

Lady Yellowhammers Win Championship game

The Rotan High School hosted their 2nd Hoop Basketball Tournament on December 14-16.The Rotan Lady Yellowhammers won their first game over Snyder JV; won the second game against Throckmorton Lady Greyhounds… Mackenize Ballard (great defense against their low post player) and her teammates held Throckmorton to 25 points as the lady Hammers won 30-25. Stats as follows: Denton-13 pts, 8 assists, and 4 RBS; Dunn-6 pts, 4 steals, and 1 assist; Bowen-6 pts, 6 RBS, 3 assists, and 1 steal; Corn-5 pts, 4 RBS, and 3 steals; Ballard-5 RBS and 3 steals; Fortuna-3 steals; Hurt-2 RBS, and Gentry- 1 RB.

The championship game featured the Lady Yellowhammers vs Lady Hornets of Aspermont on December 16 at 7:30 p.m. The Hammers jumped out to an 8-0 run with 4:18 left in the opening period, but the Hornets closed the gap at the end of the 1st period… Rotan 11 and Aspermont 10.

Varsity Baksetball in Jaybird Land

The Varsity Boys basketball team made their -sic. At the end of the tournament they won two games and lost two games.

Thursday night for their first game in the tournament The Jaybirds went head to head for a rough game with Tolar. By halftime each team had shown what they are made of and the score was 15-18 Jaybirds in the lead.

The end of the fourth quarter usually means the game has come to an end unless you’re tied up 30-30 with Tolar then you fight till the end. Both teams were looking to rise above by the end leading to a second overtime after ending the first 33-33. Thankfully the Jaybirds took bigger strides, made cleaner shots, and left all they had on the court with the end score of 38-34.

Lady Lions win Borden County Tournament

The Lady Lions started the week with two exciting games against Eastland; both the J.V. and the varsity came away victorious. The J.V. game was close all the way. The girls lead 11-9 at the end of the first quarter, and 18-17 at the half. They were up by 4 points at the end of the third quarter and the game was tied 33-33 at the end of regulation. The J.V. girls held the Eastland girls to two points in the overtime period; while scoring 6 themselves. Lucy Alls scored 4 points and Emilea Cole scored 2 points in the overtime to secure the win 39-35. The stats were: Berkley Johnson 13 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal, Lucy Alls 10 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals, Caitlyn Benson 5 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, Emilea Cole 5 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, Brynlie Johnson 4 points, 7 rebounds, Nanette Rios 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, Lauren LaCoste 2 points, 2 rebounds.

Lady Hornets fall to Westbrook Wildcats

Tuesday night the Lady Hornets fell to the Westbrook Wildcats 60-44 after walking away with a 2-1 record from the weekend Guthrie tournament.

Thursday, the Hornets defeated the Benjamin Mustangs 42-39 in the first game of the tournament, with Kenedee Shugart earning her second double-double of the season with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Friday, Aspermont fell to Guthrie 39-30, and Saturday the ladies finished the tournament with a 63-39 win against Motley County.

Jaybirds command the court

The Jayton Lady Jays are coming into the season hot on the game so far. The overall record thus far for the Lady Jays is 10-3. The Jayton varsity girls basketball team is ranked 15th in Class 1A as of December 4th above competitors such as Robert Lee (ranked 16) and nearby Roby (ranked 22).

The girls competed in the Highland girls basketball tournament winning two of three games. On Thursday November 30th the Lady Jays played Roscoe demolishing them 45-17. The following day the Lady Jays met up with Westbrook once more only to lose by seven points.

Jaybirds accept defeat

The Jayton Jaybirds 2017 football season has been brought to an end after losing to the Sands Mustangs 12-60 for the Area Championship.

The Jaybirds have come a long way from the beginning of the season with the ending record sitting at 8-4. This group of young athletes has grown as a team offensively as well as defensively. Overcoming the difficulties and obstacles together alongside the coaches with support from the fans.

Aspermont Hornets - Regional Champs!

The Aspermont Hornets made history Friday night after defeating the Moran Bulldogs 56-8 for a Regional Championship.

Since going to state in 1999, Asper-mont ISD dropped into the six-man level in 2001 and have been no strangers to the playoffs since.

The Hornets made their first playoff appearance as a six-man team in 2002, falling to the Ira Bulldogs 50-56. In 2003, they beat Highland 37-30 for a first Bi-District Championship, and in 2004 they were named back-to-back Bi-Dis-trict Champs after a 56-0 win against Richland Springs.
