Wow! what a week, half of the month has already flew by, Joe and I rode around one day to get out of the house. We ran up on the sand hill cranes again eating on the grain fields. We saw so many pretty pictures to paint, I've got to get my paints out again. I have one started of a man and two little boys driving an old wagon, I bet they were going fishing!!!!! I've been down these past 3 weeks, it's a good thing Joe can cook, he has had to do everything, thank goodness it wasn't covid, but between a sinus infection, food poisoning , and then "good old Arthur" came visiting me in my knees, I was down, and boy I did a good job of it this time. For the first time in my life Home Health came to see me, and I thought of Patty Morrow helping me so much with Lester. We all need to be sure and thank all these young folks that keep us all going, they got me a physical therapy to get me going again so we are working on it. I was always so active this weather, winter, covid virus, and all the rest got me down, but thank goodness I checked negative, so give thanks for that. Th farmers are already starting plowing getting ready for the new crop, I hope they make a crop this year, they all deserve it. I can just hear my Dad say "Be a better year next year", my Jay says the same thing he makes a good farmer!!!!!! Our friends from Tennessee are going back home, we didn't get to visit with them this time because of the cold weather, we couldn't set outside at the picnic tables and visit. Hopefully they can come back in the summer and visit with us awhile, she can breathe better here in Aspermont than she can at their home. Maybe they find them a home here and they can live here all the time, they have a huge Mobile Home that they trave and live in.

“Free, cheap abortion is a policy of social defense. To save ourselves from being murdered in our beds and raped on the streets, we should do everything possible to encourage pregnant women who don’t want the baby and will not take care of it to get rid of the thing before it turns into a monster…” Nicholas von Hoffman

As I’ve written before, I’ve made it my personal custom to spend some time on Martin Luther King Jr. Day reading from Dr. King’s April 16, 1963 “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.” In my estimation, it’s one of the most important, impactful pieces of writing about transforming a society for good. The brilliance of the words are made even more powerful by the author being jailed in the pursuit of good, at the time it was written.

WRITING AD FOR BROADCAST

Body
When I was teaching broadcast writing and production at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in Odessa, I laid down some rules for writing radio or television commercials. Basically they said two things: 1. No trite overused phrases. 2. Surprise the audience with something unexpected.

The Pandemic of Pessimism vs. the Opportunities of Optimism.

Body
“The sky is falling! The end is near!” In a variety of words, we are hearing these dire warnings issued by the talking heads on television and on talk radio, daily. The fear then permeates into the minds and hearts of listeners who then spread to their friends, family, and coworkers. Yes, fear and pessimism can travel just like a virus. Washing your hands and wearing masks won’t help. Social distancing will, but it requires far more than staying six feet away. Avoid the carriers of pessimism like the plague.

Texas seceded from the Union in 1861 for political reasons. Some in the Lone Star State want to do this again. I would rather be identified as both an American and a Texan. Smugly I say, there is no more extraordinary birthright. But, for those of you on the secession train right now, here are some considerations.

Old Glory News

Well another week has gone by and things seem to be getting worse. More folks around here have gotten sick and more funerals have been held.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Body
"It is a tragedy, perhaps, that human beings can get so much energy and enthusiasm from hate. If you want to feel ten feet tall and as though you could run a hundred miles without stopping, hate beats pure cocaine any day. Hitler resurrected a beaten, bankrupt, half-starved nation with hatred and nothing more. Imagine that."

Wasn't the snow out of this world awesome Joe took pictures to send to Ann and Korel so they could see them. Korel said, "I don't ever remember snow like that," She loves the cold weather and we tease her she needs to live at the North Pole. She's Ann's daughter that is not well, and she's such a sweetheart, so we all spoil her when we can. Joe and I watched it just get heavier and heavier on the trees, and our old evergreen tree was a picture to behold. We needed the moisture so everyone is very thankful for it. You could rake off the top of the snow and under it was water, water. Joe and I rode around last week one day, and it's so dry at the farm. Remember when you were a kid you could get out and build snowmen, slide down the hills, at rotan we had an old hill, called the school house hill just north of where the schools are built now. Oh! what fun we had sliding down that hill and building snowmen and having snow ball fights!!!!! Those days are gone, the old hill has been flat and the kids have to fun them fun somewhere else. Well folks this one is short, nothing going on in Aspermont, Covid is raging, I have been sick but it's not covid thank goodness, but 24 hour virus, then on top of that my allergy has been unreal, so Carol has been a good girl, all she has done is set in her chair, and watch TV with Joe, he found out he could cook again, and he's a good one. Visit with you next week
